New Hampshire consistently ranks among the highest states for per-capita alcohol consumption in the nation. Approximately 1 in 4 NH adults report binge drinking, and alcohol-related emergency department visits continue to rise across the state.
Alcohol is the most widely used addictive substance in New Hampshire, yet only a fraction of those who need treatment actually receive it. Alcohol contributes to hundreds of deaths annually in NH through liver disease, accidents, and alcohol-related incidents.
These aren’t just statistics — they represent families in Salem, Derry, Nashua, Manchester, and across the region who need access to compassionate, evidence-based alcohol treatment.

Understand that alcohol addiction is a medical condition, not a lack of willpower. Chronic alcohol use physically changes the brain’s chemistry and reward system, making quitting without professional support extremely difficult and potentially dangerous.
Alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Unlike many other substances, severe alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures, delirium tremens, and can be life-threatening. Professional medical supervision is critical. Never encourage someone to quit “cold turkey” without clinical guidance.
Communicate clear limits: “I love you, and I won’t participate in behaviors that support your drinking.” Follow through consistently. Boundaries protect your wellbeing and can motivate change without pushing them away.
Choose a time when they’re sober. Use “I” statements: “I’m worried about your health” rather than “You drink too much.” Mention that medications like Vivitrol can reduce cravings and make recovery more manageable. Offer to call Trailhead together.
Your mental health matters too. Consider therapy for yourself, join a support group like Al-Anon, and maintain your own routines. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Our family support program is open to all family members 18+, past and present clients. We offer individual family therapy sessions and monthly Zoom education groups covering codependency, family systems, and substance use education.
Call for Family SupportIt’s common for people struggling with alcohol addiction to resist treatment. Denial is a hallmark of alcohol use disorder — but professional treatment with medical support makes recovery achievable.
